Looking beyond the dental chair
In 2014, Dr. Jill Wade reflected on returning to the BaleDoneen Preceptorship with members of the Stonebriar Smile Design team. The course focused on cardiovascular prevention and the role dental professionals can play in more connected healthcare.
The experience reinforced a principle that continues to shape the practice: oral health information can contribute to a broader understanding of a patient’s wellbeing, particularly when dentists and physicians communicate.
Why oral inflammation matters
Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that deserves active management for the sake of the teeth, gums, and supporting bone. Research has also identified associations between periodontal inflammation and certain systemic health concerns.
An association is not proof that one disease directly causes another. It does, however, support a prevention-minded approach that takes oral inflammation seriously and encourages patients to share relevant findings with their medical providers.
Your health history guides safer care
A complete health history is as important in the dental office as it is in a physician’s office. Medications, diagnoses, surgeries, sleep concerns, allergies, and changes in overall health may influence dental treatment and help the team recognize when medical collaboration is appropriate.
When your dental and medical teams understand the same health story, they can make more informed decisions with you.
Prevention through partnership
Routine dental checkups and cleanings provide opportunities to identify changes early, manage oral inflammation, and discuss home-care habits. For patients with additional risk factors, a personalized plan may include periodontal care or coordination with a physician.
Stonebriar Smile Design’s approach to wellness dentistry and the BaleDoneen Method is intended to complement—not replace—medical evaluation and treatment.
Being a healthcare advocate means listening carefully, communicating clearly, and helping each patient understand how oral care fits into a larger wellness plan.
