Have you ever thought about what really makes for “good oral hygiene habits?” There are the standard thoughts of:

  • Brushing 2 – 3 times per day
  • Flossing
  • Rinsing with antibacterial mouth rinse
  • Professional Dental Cleanings

What you might not realize are some interesting facts regarding dental health:
1. Babies are born with no dental cavity causing bacteria within their mouth. In fact, mothers often are the first to transmit the bacteria to their children via kissing, blowing food to cool it, etc.
2. Saccharine sodium, which is generally used to sweeten tooth paste, is 500 times sweeter than sugar.
3. You should try to maintain a 6 foot distance from your toilet to your toothbrush when brushing as flushing can spray airborne pathogens up to 6 feet in the air when a toilet is flushed. Also – always change your toothbrush after any illness such as a cold or any virus or bacterial infection. Reintroducing the bacteria into your mouth could reinfect you with the same illness.
4. There was a massive surge of patients with dental decay the year Coke was released to the public.
5. Placing a cap on a toothbrush head actually favors bacterial growth, as the moisture is increased in enclosed containers favoring the growth of bacteria.
